Containers have replaced traditional stacking methods in maritime transportation, and today, most of the shipments made with the exception of bulk cargoes are made by containers and are increasingly preferred. Cargo transportation is becoming widespread around the world and almost all products are transported by container. However, this does not mean that the risks involved in shipping are ultimately a thing of the past. Loads are still exposed to climatic, biological and chemical stresses that cause losses. The container type is very simple.

These containers are general purpose containers. There are 45′ and 54′ length types as well, but the use of containers of this size is very rare.

It has two doors, only one of which can open outwards. It is water and airtight when the container door is closed. The material used in container manufacturing is selected considering both the carrying capacity and the volume. Usually steel and aluminum are used. Steel containers have less loading capacity because steel is heavier.

The length and width dimensions are the same as the general purpose containers, but since the roof is open, the upper height cannot be mentioned. Generally, monolithic machines, large sized marble slabs, aluminum profiles and similar sized products are transported. It can also be used for loads with overflow, in which case the overflow is reported to the carrier making the shipment. Its base is a bit thicker as it is frequently used for heavy cargo transportation and because it falls under the special equipment class, a surcharge is usually added to the freight.

Reefer containers are specially insulated containers with a cooling unit inside, prepared to carry the loads that need to be transported at a standard temperature. It is usually 20′ and 40′, although it is a rare piece of equipment, 45′ variants are also available. High cube ones are used to transport light and bulky loads (flowers, fruits, etc.).
